Are you a wildlife enthusiast looking for an exhilarating and unforgettable experience in the natural world? Join us on a wildlife watching tour in the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, where you will have the fully chances to track down one of the shyest, most elusive, and least understood mammals in their wild and natural habitat: the red panda.

Thanks to the increase in conservation efforts and sustainable tourism, our local guides and wildlife trackers are exceptionally experienced and have probably seen more wild red pandas than anyone else on earth. Whilst we cannot guarantee a sighting, our guides' expertise means that sightings are increasing, and we boast an impressive record of previous sightings.

We work with the Red Panda Network (RPN) to contribute heavily to the continued survival and research of red pandas in their natural habitat. By employing local people as our guides and tracking crew and staying in local homestay at Kushe Village of Jajarkot (in the heart of red panda territory), we contribute directly to sustainable eco-tourism in this amazing location.

To increase our chances of seeing red pandas and other wildlife, we use the latest equipment, including high powered HD spotting scopes, camera traps, spotlights, and even night vision and thermal imaging (on request). Our full-time guides include one of the leading red panda conservationists and key member of the RP Network, Niraj Pun Magar, as well as local red panda tracking guides who live in the surrounding villages and are now employed to protect the red panda habitat.

The best (and perhaps only) seasons to see red pandas in the wild are the shoulder months of the monsoon and summer seasons of the far eastern Himalayan foothills. The spring (mid-March to mid-May) and autumn (October to November) provide cool enough temperatures for the red panda to come out onto large branches to sunbathe in the morning and be more active throughout the day.

As the tour is predominantly located at an altitude of 9,800ft-13,000ft, a good level of fitness or at least experience at hill walking is required. However, all trekking is done at your own pace, and the longest treks are usually less than an hour. We will provide a comprehensive pre-departure pack, including a full packing list of recommended equipment, but some essentials include binoculars or a spotting scope, light and durable walking clothes, waterproof jackets and trousers, hiking socks, gloves, hats, scarves, fleeces, thermals, and waterproof and comfortable walking boots with ankle support. Don't forget to bring plenty of memory cards or film for your camera, spare batteries, sun cream, a sun hat, and sun glasses. Snacks and sugary foods are also a good idea.

Embark on a thrilling Red Panda Tour in Nepal and discover the fascinating world of this endangered species found across the Himalayas of South Asia. From the Eastern Himalayas to Southwestern China, red pandas have a native range that encompasses the majestic Himalayan mountain range. These adorable mammals are mostly herbivorous and primarily feed on bamboo. They have reddish-brown fur, a long, shaggy tail, and a waddling gait due to their shorter front legs. Although they are only slightly larger than domestic cats, they have a longer body and can weigh up to 6kg.

Your itinerary focuses on the Kushe RMC of Jajarkot district, which is known to be a habitat for red pandas. These skillful climbers spend most of their time in trees curled up with their long, bushy tails wrapped around their heads. Their thick reddish-brown fur offers additional protection from the cold, often harsh, mountain weather. During the tour, you will have a guide to accompany you and provide insights about the red pandas and their natural habitat. You will also get to experience the day-to-day activities of the typical rural village in the Jajarkot district of Nepal.

In Nepal, around 1000 red pandas are protected inside national parks, but they remain one of the most endangered species in the country as well as the whole world. There are also some communities of red pandas in Western and Eastern Nepal in the districts like Jajarkot, Ilam, Panchthar, and Taplejung where there are no national parks or wildlife reserves. However, these areas are home to one-fourth of the pandas. To protect these remaining communities of red pandas, non-profit organizations such as the Red Panda Community and Red Panda Network have been working since 2007. They aim to spread awareness among local people and take actions to protect the endangered species through habitat management, sustainable livelihood, and awareness building.
